Egypt bid farewell to Africa Cup of Nations after losing on penalties (8-7) to DR Congo

Egypt managed to overcome the Democratic Republic of Congo in the final of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast, losing on penalties 8-7 after official time ended in a 1-1 draw. While the two teams were equal, goalkeeper Abu Jabal missed the last penalty kick for the "Pharaohs", while his Congolese counterpart Mbassi scored the winning shot and qualified for the next round, where the players of French coach Desabre face Guinea, the winner earlier Sunday over Equatorial Guinea 1-0.

The seven-time defending champions were deprived of their star Mohamed Salah and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy (who will be out of action for at least three months), and finally Al Ahly midfielder Imam Ashour dropped out of the starting line-up due to a concussion (which will return if they qualify for the quarter-finals).
